BME Research Funding Opportunities

There are many opportunities at CCNY and externally to fund your research opportunities. We encourage you to investigate these links below and discuss with your faculty advisor or mentor--some of these require you to apply with a project and/or mentor already identified. BME faculty regularly host students 

Undergrad Summer Opportunities 

Here is a non-comprehensive list of research opportunities for BME undergrads

  • The CCNY Opportunities in Research and Creative Arts (ORCA) program--info and application --application deadlines are typically in March of each year
  • The CCNY-MSK U54 Partnership for Cancer Research hosts Partnership Undergraduate Research Training (PURT) opportunities each summer. Applications usually close in March, but check back regularly.
  • The CCNY CREST IDEALS program combines research opportunities in materials and photonics.
  • The CCNY U-RISE program offers research opportunities with a faculty mentor for undergrads after their first 2 years. It offers year-round support for 2 years.
  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has several summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program of its own, please see here. The specifically have an Engineering Summer Program, a Molecular Imaging Summer Program, and a Computational Biology Summer program.
  • The CUNY Velay Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program at the Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC) is another great option.
  • Typically, BME @ CCNY funds 2-3 students for its own REU program each year. Applications are typically mailed to all undergrads in March or April by Dr. Nicoll or Dr. Payton. Please follow application instructions on the form emailed to you by them, and contact Dr. Nicoll directly with questions.

Graduate Research Fellowship Opportunities

If you are interested in graduate school, or currently in graduate school, here are a few opportunities.

  • The NSF GRFP is a highly prestigious research fellowship. Many undergraduates apply for this in their final year, or grad students apply in their first year. Contact your faculty mentor of advisor for help with this.
  • The NIH funds a few fellowship programs, typically through their F31 mechanism. These are typically for PhD students in their 2nd or 3rd years.
  • The NSF-funded CUNY NanoBioNYC fellowship program offers stipend support for PhD students through the ASRC/Graduate Center. This application is limited to first year PhD students.
  • The NIH-funded G-RISE program offers stipend support for first or second year PhD students. Please see their website for specific requirements and applications.
  • The Department of Education-funded TREAD program offers graduate fellowships for incoming PhD students at CCNY in several subdisciplines which are relevant to BME majors.
  • Johns Hopkins University maintains an excellent database of PhD student fellowship opportunities.
