Each year the Psychology Department awards psychology students cash prizes for excellence in scholarship and research. The six awards differ in amount, purpose, and basis for selection:
The Bernard R. Ackerman Foundation Awards
Amount: $150.00 to each recipient
Purpose of Award: The Ackerman award is given to one graduating undergraduate psychology major and to three Clinical Psychology Ph.D. candidates who are completing their doctorate and who display exceptional ability and promise.
Basis for Selection: The names of undergraduate students are solicited from Department members, transcripts are checked, and recommendations are considered by the Executive Committee of the Department. The Clinical Psychology Ph.D. candidates are nominated by the Clinical Ph.D. Program Head and confirmed by Executive Committee of the Department.
The Joseph E. Barmack Awards
Amount: $100.00 for each category
Purpose of Award: The Barmack awards are given for the best Honors paper to an undergraduate majoring in Psychology; for the best thesis to a Masters student majoring in the General Psychology Masters Program, for the best thesis to a Ph.D. candidate in Cognitive Neuroscience Ph.D. Program, and for the best thesis to a Ph.D. candidate in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Program.
Basis for Selection: Nominations are solicited from department faculty for best Honors paper and/or Ph.D. theses, which are then reviewed by the Joseph E. Barmack Memorial Committee.
The Gardner Murphy Award
Amount: $50.00 per recipient
Purpose of Award: The Murphy award is given to one or more graduating psychology undergraduate majors who have shown exceptional merit in psychology.
Basis for Selection: Nominations are solicited from department faculty based on scholastic records and other indices. The final decision is made by Psychology Department Executive Committee.
The Gardner Murphy Memorial Fund/CCF
Amount: Variable Cash Award
Purpose of Award: The Memorial Fund was set up in memory of first Chairperson of the Psychology Department, Gardner Murphy. The fund is used to encourage and assist psychology majors in their research efforts.
Basis for Selection: Students who are working on research projects are recommended to the Chairperson. The Gardner Murphy Committee decides on the eligibility and on the amount of the award.
The Francis P. Hardesty Award
Amount: $100.00 per recipient
Purpose of Award: The Hardesty award aims to further the education of undergraduate and Masters students of psychology who show excellence in psychology and especially for work in the history of psychology, the psychology of gender, or in developmental psychology. The funds also may be used for facilitating research or scholarship in these areas.
Basis for Selection: The Chairperson of the Department determines the manner in which the funds are used in accordance with the stated intentions of the award.
The Ward Medal
Amount: $50.00 per recipient
Purpose of Award: The Ward Medal is given to the best Psychology major of the graduating class.
Basis for Selection: For Grades, as reported by the registrar.
