Public Health Leadership and Management
The Foundations in Public Health Leadership and Management course provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential principles and practices of leadership and management in the field of public health. It is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills required to excel in leadership roles within public health organizations and initiatives.
Course Objectives:
• Explore the fundamental concepts of leadership and management within the context of public health.
• Understand the importance of effective leadership in addressing public health challenges and promoting positive health outcomes.
• Examine various leadership theories and their application in public health settings.
• Develop skills in strategic planning, resource allocation, and team leadership specific to public health.
• Analyze real-world case studies in public health leadership and management to understand practical challenges and solutions.
• Foster an ethical and equity-focused approach to public health leadership.
Course Deliverable: Leadership Development Plan
The Leadership Development Plan is a comprehensive project that challenges students to integrate the principles and practices of public health leadership and management into a real-world scenario. This project encourages students to reflect on their own leadership styles and develop a plan for their personal leadership growth within a public health context. The Leadership Development Plan should synthesizes their self-assessment, philosophy, goals, action plan, and reflections. The plan should be well-organized and demonstrate a basic understanding of public health leadership principles.
Prerequisite: Participants should have a Bachelor's degree or certification in some healthcare profession and work in direct services or community health.

About the Instructor: Deidre Sully
Deidre Sully (Yaffe Assaan) is a dynamic public health advocate with over 18 years of diverse experience from oncology to tobacco control and reproductive health. She is dedicated to fostering healthier communities and driving policy change. Her extensive background encompasses partnership building, community engagement, policy influence, and collaboration with government officials. She has also worked with Columbia University's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) as an instructor and workshop facilitator during their summer youth program since 2018. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at St. Augustine University, an HBCU in Raleigh, NC.
Yaffe's track record includes a transformative 12-year tenure in public health advocacy efforts with an NYC-based nonprofit organization, expanding smoke-free protections throughout New York City, serving as spokesperson, and identifying initiatives to set organizational policy priorities. She currently coordinates community outreach for ANU Life Global Ministries, providing feminine hygiene education and supplies to women and girls facing housing insecurity or hardship. She has also worked with Columbia University's Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) as an instructor and workshop facilitator during their summer youth program since 2018.
