It is critical to complete an internship while you are pursuing your degree to make you more marketable to employers upon graduation. Employers today are looking for new college graduates that have some type of internship experience in their field and 60% of the internships completed by students turn into full-time employment.
TYPES OF INTERNSHIPS
- Paid Internship - With a paid internship, the employer will pay you for the work that you are doing. These internships can go for any length of time depending on the employer's needs and the student's availability.
- For-credit Internship - With a "For-credit" or "Credit-Bearing" internship, the student receives academic credit for completing the internship. These internships generally last a semester. The student must speak with an academic advisor to find out the best way of obtaining credit for their internship. CPDI can arrange for a student to receive credit for an internship if their academic department does not offer credit for an internship. But that academic credit will go towards their credits for graduation not their credits for their major. Internship for credit must be arranged prior to the semester of the when the student wants to complete the internship.
- Volunteer Internship - With a volunteer internship, the student volunteers his/her time in order to get experience in their desired career field. The payoff in doing a volunteer internship is that is could turn into a full time opportunity.
