Computer Science Co-op Program
The CCNY Computer Science Department gives students the ability to earn 3-6 academic credits for their summer internships or 3 credits for Fall or Spring internships.
Below are general rules and requirements
- Credits will be applied to the Free Electives first. If the student has completed their Free Electives, they will then be applied to a General Technical Elective (not CS Group Electives).
- You MUST have completed Algorithms and Software Design Lab by the time you are submitting your paperwork. Currently enrolled does not qualify. You will be required to submit the most recent copy of your CUNYfirst transcript.
- Student MUST pay for the credits. In regards to the summer co-op, you are advised to contact the Financial Aid Office to inquire further about payment and/or any financial aid assistance available for the summer session.
- The student is responsible for finding their own placement. If they need assistance with finding a potential placement, they may seek help from CCNY's Career and Professional Development Institute (CPDI), as this office has numerous employer partners. However, please note that CPDI does not guarantee a placement for a potential co-op semester/session.
- Once the internship has been secured, you can reach out to CPDI at cpdi@ccny.cuny.edu to inquire about the next review session.
- With the review sessions, you will have to have a completed co-op form, copy of your unofficial transcript and offer letter.
- CPDI will sign off on the documentation and forward all documentation to the Computer Science Department for final approval. After departmental approval, you will be granted permission for course registration through CUNYFirst.
- Student must sign into CUNYFirst and register for the course after they have been notified they have been granted permission.
All students must complete the Co-op Bootcamp (CSc 59004), which is offered via Blackboard. The bootcamp MUST be taken alongside Co-op Study I (CSc 59001)
Academic Evaluation - To earn academic credit, your co-op faculty advisor will expect to see a written report describing your project, and you also need to make a short presentation. The report should show that you have done some research as well as development and coding, meaning that you have read a couple of articles relevant to the project. The report should contain a brief review of the relevant articles together with a description of the work you have done. Include a list of the articles at the end of the report, and cite them (as well as input from co-workers and supervisors) where appropriate in discussing your own work. As a general guideline, figure on writing between 5 and 10 double spaced pages. Plan on making a 10 minute presentation based on your written report, either at City College before the end of the summer session or at a recorded video session uploaded to your website.
