Hike the Palisades with The CCNY Outdoors Project - November 11, 2023

Dear City College Campus Community,

Interested in an escape from the city and surrounding yourself with beautiful Fall foliage just a half hour away from NYC? Please join CCNY’s Outdoors Project for a hike in Palisades Interstate Park on Saturday, November 11th.

This hike will feature several cliff top views, some rock scrambling and a walk along the shore of the Hudson River. At the halfway point, we will stop at the Women’s Federation Monument, which is a trailside monument on the clifftop of Alpine, NJ, dedicated in 1929 to honor the role that the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs took in preserving the Palisades.

The group will be taking Coach USA bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal, which will drop us off at the Palisades Interstate Park Commission Headquarters (departure time TBD). From there, we will head North on the Long Path, then turn East on Forest View Trail, which will lead us down rock stairs for about 520 feet to the shoreline where we will head back South along the Shore Trail. This trail will bring us to Closter Dock Trail which is a 360 foot climb along a switchback trail. The hike will end where it started at the Palisade Interstate Park Commission Headquarters. The headquarters has public restrooms available to use before and after the hike. Departure time back to NYC is TBD.

This is considered to be a moderately difficult hike, where we will be handling several rock scrambles, uphill portions and rocky terrain. Forest View Trail is a steep section with rock stairs that can become very slippery with the leaves and if we’re having wet weather. Additionally, there will also be flat, dirt path sections of the hike which will feel like a nice leisurely walk! As you sign up for this hike, please consider your fitness level, health and ability. We will not dissuade you from this hike, but please be advised the terrain on this hike is more difficult than other hikes we have done in the past.

The hike is approximately 6 miles long and is estimated to be about 3 hours. (This is dependent on skill level, pace, as well as the group’s overall timing). We will be moving at a 2-2.5 pace. Along the way, there are plenty of areas to stop and rest, take photos, and of course hydrate. During the hike, we will decide as a group the best place to stop for a lunch break.

Hikers should wear hiking boots or sneakers, synthetic, quick-drying layers, bring water (at least 2 liters), lunch, snacks and a waterproof winter jacket. There are a limited number of spots, so sign up quickly! If you are interested in attending, please sign up HERE.

If the form is closed, please fill out this form to be added to our waitlist and our listserv.

We look forward to seeing you all in the great outdoors!

Sincerely,

The CCNY Outdoors Project Team
