Commencement FAQs

Here’s to you, Class of 2025 — the finish line is in sight! 

Congratulations — You've worked hard, grown tremendously, and now it's time to get ready for the celebration you deserve. We're here to make sure the transition from student to graduate is as smooth and memorable as possible.

As graduation approaches, we know you have plenty of questions about what’s next. This FAQ page is here to guide you through the final stretch — from cap and gown details to ceremony info, diplomas, and everything in between.

The deadline for students to register for Spring 25 commencement is 4/21/2025

Will we be receiving our Diploma at Commencement

No, Usually, the diploma is available approximately 3 months after the conclusion of your graduating semester. By normal procedures, you would get an email from Registrar that you can pick it up when it is ready. The best method to be updated would be to keep a lookout on your citymail for updates from Registrar or to take a look at their website: https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/registrar/diplomas.

Will we have our name called and are we eligible to march on the stage?

Yes, during both events students will both have their name called and will be walking the stage.

How do I get additional tickets?

Due to space limitations, we are unable to distribute additional tickets. However, you may coordinate with classmates who are not using all their guest passes.

I want to attend but I am not graduating this Spring

You must speak with your academic advisor to confirm that you meet your program’s requirements to participate in Commencement. If eligible, your program will notify the Office of Student Life. Once approved, you will receive an email granting you access to the ticketing platform. Please note that your name will not appear in the 2025 Commencement program. Please note the deadline for this request is 4/13/2025

What if I don’t want to have my name in the commencement book?

Is there a deadline for students to opt out from the commencement book?

Yes, it is April 21st

I have not had a chance to order my cap and gown is there still time?

Yes, the deadline to order your Cap and Gown is April 18th, please click on the link below for more details: https://colleges.herffjones.com/college/ccny/

Does the graduation information apply to both undergrad and grad students?

Yes, this Class of 2025 website and our mass emails apply to both, undergraduate and graduate students.

I'm a senior and haven't received graduation emails. Can I be added to the list?

All emails regarding graduation will/have been sent to your CityMail accounts. Make sure you double-check all folders, including Spam. If the emails are not found, please reach out to us via studentlife@ccny.cuny.edu with answers to the following questions: Did you apply to graduation? If so, when did you apply?

I believe I am eligible for an honors cord; how do I go about receiving it?

Honors cords are distributed by your division of study

Is it mandatory to purchase my cap and gown?

Purchasing a cap and gown is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. It's a meaningful way to mark this milestone with your loved ones. Financial aid options may be available if cost is a concern.

How much does Graduation cost?

That cost is primarily up to what you decide to get. The ceremonies are cost-free. Please view the home page to see which items are recommended and which are optional.

I'm looking to get the 2024-2025 yearbook for the Class of 2024.

The yearbook will USUALLY be available the Fall after graduation as we include the senior class in the yearbook. You would receive an email to your city mail when the yearbook is ready for purchase.

Can I change my name for the Main Commencement Book?

Yes. Because the Main Commencement Book is an unofficial document, you can have your chosen name listed. You do not need to provide any legal documentation to request this change. To change your name in the Main Commencement Book, please see this link to download a "Commencement Book Name Adjustment Request Form". Please email this completed form to Joann Huang ( jhuang3@ccny.cuny.edu ), Hermington Gomez ( hgomez@ccny.cuny.edu ), and Dion Dennis ( ddennis1@ccny.cuny.edu ). Please also 'cc Ana King-Garcia ( akinggarcia@ccny.cuny.edu ), Jasmin Salcedo ( jsalcedo@ccny.cuny.edu ), Simone Tarver ( smcmillion@ccny.cuny.edu ), and the CCNY Office of the Registrar ( registrar@ccny.cuny.edu ).

The deadline to submit this form for the 2024-2025 Academic Year is Monday, April 21st, 2025.

Can I change my name on my diploma?

To change your name on your diploma, you typically need to follow these steps:

  • Complete a Name Change Request Form – This form is usually available through the CCNY Registrar’s Office website or in person
     
  • Provide Legal Documentation
    • Required
      • State Issue Id
      • Social Security Card
    • Secondary
      • Court order
      • Marriage certificate
      • Divorce decree
      • Government-issued ID (if applicable)
         
  • Submit the Request – The completed form and supporting documents should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office in person or via email (check CCNY’s website for the correct email).
     
  • Pay Any Fees (If Applicable) – If the diploma has already been issued, there may be a fee for a replacement diploma with the updated name.
     
  • Wait for Processing – Processing times may vary, so it’s best to check with the Registrar’s Office for an estimated timeline.

Please note the deadline for this is June 1st 2025

Is there anything I should avoid bringing to the main commencement ceremony?

Yes, please see the list below:

  • Umbrellas
  • Weapons of any type including firearms, knives, and pepper spray
  • Masks or costumes
  • Animals (Service Animals Exempt)
  • Alcohol, illegal substances, tobacco products and e-cigarettes
  • Large bags and backpacks, clear bags or small clutches are acceptable
  • Noisemakers such as whistles, horns, or air horns
  • Banners, flags, signs, beach balls, projectiles, and balloons
  • Professional photography equipment including tripods and other professional camera equipment
  • Hoverboards, skateboards, and rollerblades
  • Drones
  • Laser pointers, fireworks, and any item deemed to compromise public safety
  • Personal folding chairs - Exceptions will be made for those with medical requirements and/or special needs
