Introducing Eric Aldrich, our New State Department Diplomat-in-Residence
Eric Aldrich, a seasoned diplomat with the U.S. Department of State, has recently taken on the role of Diplomat in Residence for New Jersey and New York, stationed at the Colin Powell School at CCNY. With a career spanning refugee issues, human rights, and academic exchanges, Aldrich brings a wealth of experience to his new role. We had the opportunity to discuss his journey and insights into diplomacy.
A Journey in Diplomacy
Aldrich's path to diplomacy was inspired by the reporting and translation work of David Cowhig, an officer at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. Cowhig broke the story of an AIDS epidemic in China’s Henan Province, igniting Aldrich's passion for global issues. Since then, his focus has shifted more toward refugee issues and fostering academic and cultural exchanges. His career has taken him across China, the South Pacific, and Central America, offering him a diverse perspective on global diplomacy.
Shaping a Worldview
One of the most significant moments in Aldrich's career was his tenure as a human rights officer in the South Pacific from 2017 to 2021. Working in Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga, and Tuvalu, Aldrich gained firsthand experience in understanding the unique challenges faced by island nations, particularly in human rights, climate change, and governance. This period underscored the importance of addressing these global challenges and reinforced his commitment to advocating for vulnerable communities.
Mentoring Future Diplomats
In his new role at the Colin Powell School, Aldrich is eager to guide students interested in international relations and public service. He plans to engage with students through virtual and in-person sessions, career fairs, and classroom visits, sharing insights from his diplomatic career. Aldrich emphasizes that being a great diplomat requires qualities like optimism, energy, integrity, judgment, and discretion. He aims to instill these values in students, helping them navigate the complexities of international diplomacy.
A Return to New York City
Returning to New York City after nearly 20 years abroad, Aldrich is excited to contribute to the Powell School's mission. He looks forward to engaging with the diverse student body and fostering a deeper understanding of international relations. For Aldrich, this role is not just a professional opportunity but also a chance to give back and support the next generation of diplomats and public servants.
