Harlem Week - Basketball and Science are a SLAM DUNK!
BASKETBALL AND SCIENCE ARE A SLAM DUNK!
The interactive exhibit DUNK! The Science of Basketball is a prime example of the innovative and engaging way the Harlem Gallery of Science, created by CCNY and Science and Arts Engagement New York, Inc. (SA EN Y) , engages young people from the Black and Latinx communities in Harlem, Upper Manhattan and the South Bronx to think about educational and career pathways into Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields.
DUNK! The Science of Basketball begins with the call back to 1950, when CCNY basketball won the NIT and NCAA Basketball Championship. CCNY remains the only college/university to accomplish this feat. It then asks visitors for some personal information, like height and age, to give personal context to the information about basketball players such as wingspan, ratio and shoe size and hang time. Self-paced, the exhibit allows visitors to spend as much or little time as they want on the various topics. NBA role models, like Allan Houston, give video tutorials on “Skills and Drills.” All in the name of science! The tour also includes a visit to the Gallery's Hall of Fame which celebrates the accomplishments of Black and Latinx scientists, artists and engineers.
DUNK! is online and accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week at:
