About Denim Day
Denim Day traces its roots back to 1999 when a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the survivor was wearing tight jeans, suggesting that she must have helped her attacker remove them, thus implying consent. Outraged by the verdict, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans in solidarity with the victim the following day.
The movement spread globally, and Denim Day became an annual event to raise awareness about sexual violence and challenge victim-blaming attitudes. Denim Day serves as a reminder of the importance of believing and supporting survivors and working towards a culture of consent and respect at CUNY.
