Can I take classes as a non-matriculated student?
Yes. Non-matriculated students may take up to 9 credits and must register on the day designated for non-matriculated students.
How do I register for classes?
When first admitted, you meet with your advisor or program director who registers you for your first semester.After that, you may register yourself for classes. Check your program planning sheets each semester as you register to ensure that you are registering for the correct classes.
What if I need to make up certain course requirements?
If you do not have the required number of prerequisite credits in social science, history, or any other liberal arts requirement, you must fulfill the missing requirements by taking classes on the undergraduate level.You will be informed of your missing credits when your application to the program is reviewed.
When do classes begin?
Read the College's Calendar each semester. Check for when classes begin, registration dates, last day for drop-add, last day for W grade, filing for graduation, etc.
What is fieldwork and how am I placed in a school?
Many of the courses you will take require fieldwork hours in middle and high schools.Your instructor might help you find appropriate placements, but if you already have a relationship with a specific school, you might be allowed to do your fieldwork there.In other cases, the Office of Clinical Practice will place you in a school.
What happens when I am ready for student teaching?
The semester before you intend to student teach, you complete an application that is signed by the program director. You deliver this application to the Office of Clinical Practice that organizes student teaching, the placements, and the related seminar. Check the deadline for applications through the Office of Clinical Practice (Field Experiences & Student Teaching).
What happens when I am nearing graduation?
You must apply for graduation.See the Registrar's page on the CCNY website for instructions.
Alongside completing the program, what other requirements do I have to fulfill to be certified?
You must complete all requirements for New York State teacher certification, including a number of tests. Certification requirements can be found on the program planning sheets on the social studies program descriptions page.
