Nhat-Dinh Nguyen (she/they) is the Secretary of WinS at The City College of New York, where she is a senior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Pure Mathematics with a minor in Economics. She believes that community is essential to learning and has actively engaged in academic settings throughout her life.
As a queer non-binary Southeast Asian woman, Nhat-Dinh knows what it feels like to not “fit in,” an experience that has shaped their understanding of the importance of community and belonging. Aware of the challenges marginalized individuals face, she is committed to creating inclusive spaces where everyone is valued and supported. This dedication drives their involvement in various initiatives, as they aim to inspire others to discover their own sense of belonging and purpose.
Nhat-Dinh began her undergraduate studies at Binghamton University at SUNY, where she pursued a B.A. in Mathematical Sciences. During this time, she was the Lead Layout Editor of the Free Press Literary Magazine and held positions in the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) and the Teachers in Mathematics Association. She also played for the Club Tennis Team and worked as a Mathematics Tutor for local high school students.
After her freshman year, Nhat-Dinh was accepted into the Mathematics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. There, she conducted research in Knot Theory, focusing on unknotting moves and the divisibility of invariant polynomials. She presented her team’s findings at the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference, and their work will be published in a forthcoming paper.
Discovering their passion for research at the Mathematics REU, Nhat-Dinh transferred to The City College of New York to further pursue her interests. She has since participated in the York College Queens Experiences in Discrete Mathematics (QED) REU, where she researched Combinatorial Graph Theory, exploring Zero Forcing and Iterative Local Models. Their team presented their results at the Young Mathematics Conference at The Ohio State University, and these findings will also be published in a forthcoming paper. At CCNY, Nhat-Dinh serves as Secretary of WinS, President of both the Math Club and AWM, and Layout Editor of The Campus Magazine. They also work as a Mathematics Tutor with the City College Academy for Professional Preparation (CCAPP).
Nhat-Dinh’s efforts reflect a desire to break down barriers and build bridges within her academic and local communities, advocating for inclusivity and supporting those who may feel marginalized. For Nhat-Dinh, community engagement is not just a responsibility; it is a vital expression of her identity and a commitment to fostering a more equitable world.
