Leadership Summit Opens Women’s History Month at CCNY

The City College of New York marks the start of Women's History Month with its 2nd Annual Women's Leadership Summit, Saturday, March 1. Themed "Renaissance Woman," the conference, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the North Academic Center (NAC) Hoffman Student Lounge, facilitates growth and connection among women's groups and professionals and CUNY students. Free and open to all CUNY students, the event is sponsored by City College's Women's Summit Student Committee and the Ernesto Malave Leadership Academy at CUNY. Registration is required. CCNY Hosts NYC Science & Engineering Fair Preliminary Round

The City College of New York will host the preliminary round of the New York City Science & Engineering Fair , 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in the Great Hall, Shepard Hall. Sponsored by the New York City Department of Education and the City University of New York , the fair is the largest high school research competition in New York City. The fair is a two-tiered competition, with approximately 485 projects invited to compete in the preliminary round. Six CCNY Students Travel to Belgium for Model European Union

Six students in City College’s fall 2013 European Union class taught by history lecturer Barbara Syrrakos’ got an opportunity to put their classroom learning into practice by participating in the SUNY Model European Union simulation, held January 8 – 11 at Vesalius College in Brussels, Belgium. LGBT Youth Face Greater Cancer Risks, CCNY-Led Study

A new study led by City College of New York psychologist Margaret Rosario found that youths of same-sex orientation are more likely to engage in behaviors associated with cancer risk than heterosexuals. The peer-reviewed findings appear in the February 2014 issue of the " American Journal of Public Health ." Titled "Sexual Orientation Disparities in Cancer-Related Risk Behaviors of Tobacco, Alcohol, Sexual Behaviors, and Diet and Physical Activity: Pooled Youth Risk Behavior Surveys," the study pooled YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) data from 2005 and 2007. 4 Mellon Mays Fellows Travel to South Africa Over Winter Break

City College of New York seniors Rene Cordero , Shanna Jean-Baptiste , Emmanuel Lachaud and Debra Williams traveled to South Africa to attend the University of Cape Town Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellows (MMUF) January program. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation funded the trip. Environmental Economics Major Finalist for Zayed Future Energy Prize

Arlae Castellanos’ solar power and energy education proposal for New York City high school earns her trip to Abu Dhabi, $50,000 to support her project Arlae Castellanos, a junior at The City College of New York majoring in environmental economics through the CUNY BA program was a finalist for the 2014 Zayed Future Energy Prize. Project Teaches Undergrads to Reconstruct Ancient Family Histories

200 students from CCNY and seven other schools provide DNA samples for initiative directed by biology professor Michael Hickerson Approximately 200 student volunteers from The City College of New York and seven other New York area colleges are participating in The New York City Student Ancestry Project.
