MA Program Overview

COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS

To fulfill the coursework requirements for the master’s degree in History students must earn a total of 30 credits [10 courses]. All students must take HIST B0000: Historical Methods and Historiography [3 credits].

To obtain the master’s degree students must have maintained and earned a GPA of 3.0 or better.

The MA Program offers a dual track system, which is described below.

TRACK REQUIREMENTS

NON-THESIS TRACK

  • Students completing the non-thesis track earn their total of 30 credits by taking: HIST B0000: Historical Methods and Historiography [3 credits] and 9 elective courses [27 credits].
     
  • Students must write two "Field Papers" of approximately 20 pages each. These papers are normally written as assignments for courses and must be certified by the course instructors and submitted to the M.A. Director. See "Field Paper Guidelines" on this site.

THESIS TRACK

  • Students completing the thesis track earn their total of 30 credits by taking HIST B0000: Historical Methods and Historiography [3 credits], 8 elective courses [24 credits], and HIST B9900: Thesis Research [3 credits].
     
  • To qualify for HIST B9900: Thesis Research students must write a thesis prospectus in consultation with their thesis adviser. The completion and approval of the thesis prospectus is a prerequisite for registration in HIST B9900: Thesis Research.
