Matthew Taveras is a senior at the City College of New York, completing a B.A. in Sociology. Born and raised in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, he has spent much of his life in and around the Sunset Park community. His interests lie generally within histories of resistance, questions of the social order, Caribbean History, and more specifically the history of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. This is reflected in his research project which studies the Dominican Republic during the 1960s, the almost Dominican Revolution, and the United States invasion of the Dominican Republic. After completing his B.A., he will pursue a PhD and continue researching, using his research to educate and learn, both in the university and the community. Matthew plans to use his research and knowledge not only in academic spaces but also as a tool in community, organizing and building collective power outside of existing institutions.
