The School of Education of The City College of New York stands in solidarity with the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community across the nation, condemning the hateful rhetoric and violence against them. While the recent attacks have been stoked by harmful statements from political leaders and the crisis of the worldwide pandemic, we recognize that racism and intolerance are not new; that they are deeply rooted in our history.
However, the hate against our AAPI communities, as well as the hate manifested against African American, Latinx, LGBTQ, and all other minoritized communities, must stop with us.
As a school of education committed to equity and justice for the education and wellbeing of all people, regardless of their backgrounds and intersectional identities, we are committed to educating ourselves, our students, and our community to better understand the struggles of the AAPI community and the structural racism of our society. We call for an end to the enmity against people from the Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander communities, and reaffirm our intentions to nurture attitudes and actions of anti-racism and respect in our future educators so that they can do the same with the children they teach.
