Alexander Turner

The American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE) has awarded Alexander Turner the Winifred Ward Scholarship. This is an incredible honor for both Alexander and the Educational Theatre program, as this is an extremely competitive and prestigious scholarship awarded in the amount of $10,000.

AATE is one of the most recognized arts education organizations. It works to ensure that every young person experiences quality theatre arts in their lives provided by proficient, talented artists and educators. Through its membership of theatre artists, in-service and pre-service teachers, professors, directors, scholars and playwrights, this organization serves more than a million students in 48 U.S. states and 19 countries worldwide.

Winifred Ward is regarded as a pioneer in educational theatre for her practice of creative drama. Each year, the Winifred Ward Memorial Fund and AATE honor one scholar nationally at the graduate or doctorate level whose experience, research, and career ambitions contribute to Ward's legacy. This tuition award supports the selected scholar's studies and encourages their future contributions to the field of creative drama.

Mr. Turner sees this award as a reflection of the entire CCNY Educational Theatre graduate program. He says, “We are a small-but-mighty ensemble of teaching artists who are passionately dedicated to the future of arts education. I feel lucky to learn alongside such talented and insightful colleagues.”

Upon graduation, Mr. Turner plans to collaborate with students of all ages in the classrooms of New York City. He also hopes to produce a few new plays for young audiences that he has developed throughout his graduate studies.
