Summer Institute 2024

Summer Institute 2024: Exploring Dominican Heritage in America

APPLICATION FOR THE SUMMER INSTITUTE CLOSED MARCH 1, 2024.

The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute (CUNY DSI) at The City College of New York will be hosting an in-person Summer Institute for 30 K-12 teachers who work with students of Dominican heritage and other multilingual students interested in learning about Dominican culture and history in the United States.

About the program

Training sessions will take place from Monday-Thursday, July 8-18, 2024 from 8:30am-1pm, for a total of 36 hours. Additional facultative activities may be offered.

Participants will receive a $2,500 stipend from the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute and a certificate of completion from the DOE to use for their continuing education certification process required by their school district.

Participants, selected from a competitive pool of applicants, will have the opportunity to spend time at the CUNY DSI Archives and Library to enhance their cultural awareness and historical knowledge of Dominican peoples in the United States. Scholars will lead the Summer Institute covering topics that include the Dominican experience in the US, Dominican Blackness, music and other cultural expressions, among others.

CUNY DSI works with DOE’s Office of the Division of Multilingual Learners, under Senior Director Maria Oliveira-Friedland at the Division of Multilingual Learners, to organize educational workshops, prepare culturally-relevant resources, and contribute to publications such as Amplifying Multilingual Voices and Learning in k-12 Education.

Program participants will contribute to the preparation of new curriculum to enhance teaching materials available to NYC public school teachers. The CUNY CHLI project will develop curricular materials focusing on Dominican heritage (culture, society, and history) designed in accordance with DOE’s Curricular Guidelines for elementary, intermediate, and high school.

The Summer Institute is possible thanks to a US Educational Congressional grant to implement the City University of New York’s Cultural/Historical Legacy Initiative to provide educational resources to promote and share Dominican heritage.

How to apply

Participants will submit their CVs and a statement of purpose detailing how the Summer Institute will contribute to their work. Applicants should describe their schoolwork and provide specific examples if they have already implemented Dominican-related curriculum or activities. Please note that K-12 teachers who are also CUNY employees are not eligible to apply.

Deadline to submit applications: March 1, 2024 by 11:59pm.

Applicants will be notified by April 1, 2024.
