The founding members of the Council of Dominican Educators established the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at The City College of New York in 1992.
Luis Álvarez-López, Ph.D.
Dr. Luis Alvarez-López sits on the faculty of Boricua College. Throughout his academic career, he has taught in the areas of Race and Ethnicity in the Unites States, Caribbean History, Latin American History, and History of the Dominican Republic. He has taught for many years at The City University of New York as an assistant professor at John Jay College, and as an adjunct instructor at City College, Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Hostos Community College. Dr. Alvarez-Lopez is the author of several books, including Dominación Colonial y Guerra Popular 1861-1865 (La Anexión y la Restauración en la Historia Dominicana) and Estado y Sociedad Durante la Dictadura de Trujillo. His other publications include a research monograph Dominican Resources and Research Questions published by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute.
Dr. Álvarez-Lopez is a graduate of the Interamerican University in Puerto Rico, and earned an M.A. in History from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras, and a Ph.D. in History from New York University.

Ana García Reyes is special assistant to the president and director of international programs at Eugenio María de Hostos Community College, The City University of New York. She serves as principal investigator for research projects linked with international academic exchanges.
For more than fourteen years, Ms. Garcia Reyes has received grant awards for academic exchange/study abroad programs from various agencies, including The State Department of Education, CUNY Caribbean Exchange, and the CUNY Study/Travel Opportunities for CUNY Students Grants. She has experience in evaluating and training personnel, and has established procedures for the development, progress, evaluation and reporting mechanism of grant funded projects.
Ms. García Reyes has served on numerous boards at the city, state, and national levels. In 2001-2002, she was president of the Dominican American National Roundtable (DANR), the first and only national Dominican American organization in the United States. She is also active in external and professional organizations, including The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, as founding and advisory board member; Hunts Point Economic Development Corporation as board member; New York City Youth Board as board member appointed by the Mayor of the City in 1995; and the New York State Committee on Dominican Heritage Celebrations. Dr. Franklin Gutierrez is writer, poet, educator, and expert in Latin American, Caribbean, and Dominican Literature. He is Professor of Spanish Language and Literature at York College, The City University of New York, since 1989. Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, his writings have been recognized at home and abroad, most recently by the inclusion of his poem "Helen" in The Norton Anthology of Latino Literature (2010).
Dr. Gutierrez is a recipient, in 2005, of La Orden del Mérito Ciudadano Duarte, Sanchez y Mella, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the Government of the Dominican Republic. In 2000 his book Enriquillo: radiografía de un héroe galvaniano, a work based on his doctoral dissertation completed at The City University of New York, received the National Essay Award from the Secretariat of State for Education and Culture. In 2008, Dr. Gutierrez was one of six honorees to receive the Secretariat’s prestigious award Personalidad Cultural Dominicana in recognition of his contributions to Dominican culture and literature.
Dr. Gutierrez is co-author of Diccionario de la Literatura Dominicana, Bibliográfico y Terminológico; Antología Histórica de la poesía dominicana del s. XX (1912-1995); and Literatura Dominicana en los Estados Unidos. Presencia Temprana 1900-1950 (both with Daisy Cocco De Filippis). He authored Evas Terrenales. Bio-bibliografías de 150 autoras dominicanas, and Palabras de Ida y Vuelta. Ensayos Literarios, among many others. His most recent piece is the novel El canal de la delicia (New York: Ediciones Alcance, 2009).
Dr. Gutierrez has a B.A. in Education and Letters from Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from The City University of New York.
Ramona Hernández, Ph.D.

Dr. Ramona Hernández is professor of sociology and director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at The City College of New York. She is a specialist in Dominican immigration and the status of Dominican workers in the U.S. economy. Renowned sociologist, much sought-after lecturer, keynote speaker, consultant, editorial board member, and the recipient of numerous grants and awards, Dr. Hernández is author of pioneering texts in the areas of migration, labor, and Dominican studies, including The Mobility of Workers Under Advanced Capitalism: Dominican Migration to the United States (named Outstanding Academic Title by Choice in2002). Dr. Hernández co-authored two other important contributions to the field Dominican Americans (1998) and Building Strategic Partnerships for Development: Dominican Republic–New York State (2004). She co-edited Desde la orilla: hacia una nacionalidad sin desalojos (2004), among other publications and reports. She is a trustee of the Sociological Initiatives Foundation.
Dr. Hernández's work is celebrated also in the Dominican Republic where she has received the country's highest civilian honor, the Meritorious Order of Duarte, Sanchez y Mella, and serves as a trustee of the International Institute of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (Instituto Global de Altos Estudios en Ciencias Sociales). \
Dr. Hernández earned the Ph.D. and M.Phil. in Sociology from the Graduate Center, CUNY; an M.A. in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from New York University; and the B.A. in Latin American History from Lehman College.
Fausto de la Rosa, M.A.

Fausto de la Rosa is principal of Unity Center for Urban Technologies High School in New York City. Between 2002 and 2005 he was Interim Acting Assistant Principal at Taft High School and Assistant Principal at the High School for Medical Science, also in The Bronx. Prior to that he was a science teacher at Park West High School and a mathematics teacher at the Health Careers and Sciences High School.
Mr. De La Rosa has also been Counselor at the Dominican Republic's Embassy in Washington, D.C., as well as Minister Counselor of the Dominican Republic's Mission to the United Nations. Since 2004 he has been an education advisor to the State Secretary of Education of the Dominican Republic.
In 1990-1991 Mr. de La Rosa was Day Student Government President at The City College of New York, his alma mater. In 1991 and while at The City College, with the support of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, he founded the LAESA Community Outreach Program, a program that for 10 years has provided ESL classes to Upper Manhattan residents as well as GED classes to high school dropouts.
Mr. De la Rosa is a graduate of The City College of New York, CUNY. He holds an M.S. in Computer Science and an M.S. in Education, also from CUNY.
Nelson Reynoso, Ph.D.

Dr. Nelson Reynoso is an associate professor in the department of student development at Bronx Community College, The City University of New York. He has also worked with outpatient drug treatment programs providing intensive clinical counseling through individual, family, and group therapy, as well as developing client-tailored projects for community-based organizations. Dr. Reynoso is currently conducting the Dominican Oral History Project, in collaboration with Dr. Sharon Utakis.
He was appointed by former President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernández Reyna, to the Higher Education Committee of the Presidential Advisory Council for Dominicans Abroad, a body that provides policy advise to the Dominican President and promotes collaborative initiatives between Dominicans living abroad and their country of origin.
Dr. Reynoso holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees in the field of Psychology from The City College of New York, and a doctorate in Higher Education from New York University.
Anthony Stevens-Acevedo, M.A.

Anthony Stevens-Acevedo is the former assistant director and founding member of the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York (CUNY DSI) at The City College of New York. He is a founding member of the Council of Dominican Educators, the Dominican Studies Association, and a Foreign Corresponding Member of the Dominican Academy of History (Dominican Republic).
Stevens-Acevedo is a historian and focuses his research on the early colonial history of the Dominican Republic. He is the lead investigator in CUNY DSI's Dominican colonial research projects.
Prior to joining CUNY DSI, Stevens-Acevedo taught Social Studies for more than a decade at Gregorio Luperón High School and Theodore Roosevelt High School, both in New York City. He has a long history of community activism in Washington Heights, the heart of the Dominican community in New York City.
Stevens-Acevedo has an M.A. in History from The City College of New York, CUNY, and a B.A. in History of the Americas from the University of Seville, Spain.
Silvio Torres-Saillant, Ph.D.

Dr. Silvio Torres-Saillant is professor of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University, where he headed the Latino-Latin American Studies Program until 2009 and held the post of William P. Tolley Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities from 2009 to 2011. During academic year 2005-2006 he was the Wilbur Marvin Visiting Scholar at Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies. Dr. Torres-Saillant is the founding director of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute at The City College of New York.
A renowned and prolific scholar in Caribbean Studies and Latino Studies, he has published widely, including such works as: An Intellectual History of the Caribbean (Palgrave Macmillan, 2006), Caribbean Poetics (Cambridge University Press, 1997), The Challenges of Public Higher Education in the Hispanic Caribbean (Markus Wiener, 2004 [co-edited]), Desde la Orilla: hacia una nacionalidad sin desalojos (Editora Manatí & Ediciones Librería La Trinitaria, 2004 [co-edited]), The Dominican Americans (Greenwood Press, 1998 [coauthored]), El retorno de las yolas (Manati & La Trinitaria, 1999), and Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage, Vol. 4 (Arte Publico Press, 2002 [co-edited]).
A senior editor for The Oxford Encyclopedia of Latinos and Latinas in the United States and associate editor of Latino Studies, Dr. Torres-Saillant formerly sat on the Board of Directors of the New York Council for the Humanities and edited the New World Studies Series at the University of Virginia Press. He continues to serve on the University of Houston's Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Project. Dr. Torres-Saillant holds a B.A. from Brooklyn College, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University.
