Nelly Rosario is an Associate Professor of Latina/o Studies at Williams College. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University and is the author of the popular novel Song of the Water Saints (2002). Her latest writings include “Latinx + DNA: Complicando the Double Helix” in Critical Dialogues in Latino and Latina Studies (2021) and “On the Origins of O,” in SO WE CAN KNOW: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth (2023). Prof. Rosario’s current project, "Doris Rodríguez & ‘Monocorde’: Un fotocómic/A Fotocomic," is a bilingual fotonovela. It will tell the origin story of Doris Rodríguez’s “MONOCORDE”: a series of drawings that document the everyday working lives of COVID-19 first responders in the Dominican Republic. Prof. Rosario’s project expands on CUNY DSI’s collaboration with Doris Rodriguez in 2020, which highlighted Rodriguez’s work. Focusing on medicine and healthcare, Rodriguez’s drawings are inspired by photographs and stories shared by doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel on the frontlines at the height of the pandemic. Prof. Rosario will draw from intimate conversations with the artist, related social-media posts, as well as scholarly writings on the subject to create a narrative capturing Rodriguez’s creative process.
