Dr. Graham Farmelo will be speaking about his latest book, “The Universe Speaks in Numbers - how modern math reveals Nature's deepest secrets”. This is a history of the entangled development of physics and mathematics over the last 60 years or so. Dr. Farmelo will also be available to autograph his books.

Graham Farmelo is a well known science writer. He is the author of several books including “The Strangest Man”, the definitive biography of Paul Dirac, Nobel Laureate, one of the inventors of quantum mechanics and one of the greatest physicists of all time and “Churchill’s Bomb: The Hidden History of Science, Politics and War”. Recently he was chosen as the official biographer of Stephen Hawking.

He was awarded the Kelvin Prize and Medal in 2012 for outstanding contributions to the public understanding of physics from the UK Institute of Physics. Awards for The Strangest Man include: Costa Prize for biography, UK, 2009; Los Angeles Times Science Book Prize, 2010; ‘Physics World’ book of the year, 2009. DR. Farmelo was also the Finalist for the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award for biography, from the PEN American Center 2010

Natalie Wolchover is a senior writer and editor at Quanta Magazine covering the physical sciences. Previously, she wrote for Popular Science, LiveScience and other publications. She has a bachelor’s in physics from Tufts University, studied graduate-level physics at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-authored several academic papers in nonlinear optics. Her writing was featured in The Best Writing on Mathematics 2015. She is the winner of the 2016 Excellence in Statistical Reporting Award, the 2016 Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award, and the American Institute of Physics’ 2017 Science Communication Award for Articles.
