Want to become a science teacher? The City College of New York prepares graduates to teach in middle and high schools and obtain their New York State teaching certification. We offer master’s degrees in secondary biology, earth science, chemistry, or physics and for candidates without a background in these disciplines we offer a master’s degree in middle school science.

We also offer an advanced certificate program for those that hold a master’s degree in science or a closely related field who would like to become middle or high school teachers.

Students from all over the world with a passion for science and science teaching find teaching jobs fast after-graduation due to the high demand for science teachers in New York City. Students with any undergraduate degree can find a path to becoming a science teacher.

Faculty Info

Faculty includes Yael Wyner, Associate Professor in the School of Education and the Department of Biology, and Program Director of Science Education at CCNY. In partnership with the American Museum Natural History, Professor Wyner developed with NSF funding Ecology Disrupted, an educational approach for linking daily life to environmental issues and sustainability. Prof. Steinberg, Professor in the School of Education and the Department of Physics and Program Director of Science Education at CCNY, received a Ph.D. in applied physics and a high school science teaching certificate from Yale University.
