Description: India is a burgeoning economy and has rapidly become an influential player on the global stage. This course will include a general study of education within the context of urban India using Postcolonial theory and a multidisciplinary framework. Perspectives on education in India will draw from fields such as History, Political Science, Spirituality, Sociology, Economics, and Arts and Culture. Contemporary issues in education that inform national policy discourse, and the impact of globalization on India, will be examined within a socio-cultural-historical framework. Course-related activities will include meetings with educators, teachers, students; lectures by guest speakers; and field trips to schools, universities, an urban slum, sites of historical and architectural significance, places of worship, and art museums and galleries. These field trips will reinforce the course content and provide a deeper understanding of contemporary life in urban India. One of the highlights of the program will be a visit to the famed Taj Mahal monument, one of the wonders of the world.
