Two juniors in The City College of New York’s Grove School of Engineering are co-winners of this year’s American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC) scholarship for excellence. Darren Lin and Reaz Rahman will receive $7,500 each for their studies. Brianna Naizir, a magna cum laude graduate of the Macaulay Honors Program at The City College of New York, is the recipient of a 2019 Jonas E. Salk Scholarship. Awarded by The City University of New York, the scholarships recognize exceptional students who plan careers in medicine and the biological sciences. As a Salk Scholar, Naizir, who earned a B.S. degree in biology in 2018, will receive a stipend of $8,000 to be allocated over three or four years of medical studies. Dr. Vincent Boudreau, the City College of New York president who blends scholarship with activism, has been named to City & State’s 2019 Higher Education Power 50 list. The list recognizes the 50 most influential people in academia statewide, including leaders of some of New York’s best-known colleges, universities and professional schools. Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, with the support of Mayor Bill de Blasio and Speaker Corey Johnson, secured a $1 million grant to fund The City College of New York’s STEM Institute’s partnership with Northern Manhattan. New York’s longest-running poetry celebration, the annual City College Poetry Festival, will take place on Friday, May 3, at the college’s Harlem campus. CCNY’s own accomplished faculty members David Groff and Estha Weiner will be the featured guest poets. More than 150 students from as many as 50 schools are expected to recite their poems at the day-long event. Now in its 47 th year, some children who participated in the festival’s early years are now teachers who bring their classes. Continuing the fine tradition of its predecessors, “Manganese Prime,” the latest chemically-powered shoebox sized-vehicle designed by City College of New York engineering students, is headed to AIChE's Chem-E-Car Competition® in Orlando, Florida, this fall. It placed fourth out of 22 entries at the AIChE Mid-Atlantic regionals at Penn State University to earn CCNY a seventh-consecutive trip to the finals against foreign and domestic competitors. In commemoration of a transformational event in the institution’s 172-year history, The City College of New York’s Black Studies Program hosts discussions and a walk April 16-18 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 protest that led to open admissions. The observance also includes the remounted 40th anniversary exhibit entitled: “ The Five Demands: The Student Protest and Takeover of 1969."
