Dr. Lawrence A. Tabak, a 1972 City College of New York graduate, will become the National Health Institutes’ (NIH) acting director, beginning on December 20, 2021. Tabak’s appointment was announced by Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra. Tabak has been the principal deputy director and the deputy ethics counselor of NIH, the nation's medical research agency, since 2010. He also previously served as acting principal deputy director of NIH in 2009, and was the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research from 2000-2010.
