Professor Lynn Appelbaum Honored for 20 years of Service

The City College of New York media and communication arts (MCA) department will honor one of its own, Professor Lynn Appelbaum , for 20 years of service at a March 13 private reception. In addition, the department has established an endowed scholarship in her honor and created a Facebook page where well-wishers can share stories and post congratulatory messages. New Study Supports Body Shape Index as Predictor of Mortality

In 2012, Dr. Nir Krakauer, an assistant professor of civil engineering in CCNY’s Grove School of Engineering, and his father, Dr. Jesse Krakauer, MD, developed a new method to quantify the risk specifically associated with abdominal obesity . A follow-up study, published February 20 by the online journal PLoS ONE, supports their contention that the technique, known as A Body Shape Index (ABSI), is a more effective predictor of mortality than Body Mass Index (BMI), the most common measure used to define obesity. Eleven City College advertising and public relations students were selected as finalists for the 2014 Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP), run by the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4As). CCNY Hosts NYC Science & Engineering Fair Preliminary Round

The City College of New York will host the preliminary round of the New York City Science & Engineering Fair , 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday, March 2, in the Great Hall, Shepard Hall. LGBT Youth Face Greater Cancer Risks, CCNY-Led Study

A new study led by City College of New York psychologist Margaret Rosario found that youths of same-sex orientation are more likely to engage in behaviors associated with cancer risk than heterosexuals. The peer-reviewed findings appear in the February 2014 issue of the " American Journal of Public Health ." Titled "Sexual Orientation Disparities in Cancer-Related Risk Behaviors of Tobacco, Alcohol, Sexual Behaviors, and Diet and Physical Activity: Pooled Youth Risk Behavior Surveys," the study pooled YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) data from 2005 and 2007.
