Europe is another summer study abroad destination for CCNY students.
New offerings, including STEM program in Cuba, aimed at increasing number of students taking courses outside United States
The City College of New York has substantially expanded its summer study-abroad programs, offering courses in 11 countries on five continents, up from five programs a year ago. Among the new options is the College's first program for STEM majors, run in collaboration with Universidad de La Habana, Cuba. The programs are available to CCNY undergraduates as well as students from other institutions, and many still have space available.
The expansion is part of an initiative led by CCNY President Lisa S. Coico, to enable more CCNY undergrads to take classes outside the United States. Researchers have found a positive correlation between study abroad and students graduating on time, noted Dr. Juan Carlos Mercado, director of CCNY's Office of Study Abroad and International Programs. In each of the past three years, approximately 300 CCNY students have participated in international summer programs.
"Thanks to President Coico, we are able to offer these unique opportunities to our students to spend four weeks abroad, earning credits and international experience," Dr. Mercado said. "Importantly, some financial aid is available through the College and CUNY to help defray student costs."
The CCNY/Universidad de La Habana Science and Technology Program consists of two three-credit courses, CHEM 31111: Synthesis of Nanomaterials for Practical Applications and CHEM 31112: Introduction to Modeling and Uses of New Nanomaterials. CCNY Professor of Chemistry Maria Tamargo, who was born in Cuba, will teach the classes, which are offered in English. The program runs July 6 – 26.
"Cuba is a stalwart in the sciences in Latin America," noted Kenneth Yanes, associate director of study abroad. "It's perhaps the best in medical health and in the sciences in Latin America so it only makes sense for us."

- CCNY-Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Social Sciences Program in Port Elizabeth, South Africa
- CCNY/Veritas Summer Program, in San José, Costa Rica
- CCNY/CIRMA Spanish Language & Social Sciences Program, June 15 – July 30, La Antigua, Guatemala
- CCNY/Yonsei University Global Village Program, Seoul, South Korea, June 25 – August 1
The CCNY-Roehampton International Summer School enables students to earn up to 10 credits and consists of two three-week sessions, June 3 – 21 and June 24 – July 12. Taught on the University of Roehampton campus, students can take classes in media and culture, Greek and Roman mythology, finance, art history, applied psychology, choreography or urban studies.
The CCNY-Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Social Sciences Program offers three six-credit options: an environmental studies course; a class titled Conflict, Human Rights, Peace and Justice in South Africa and a service-learning elective. It runs June 24 – July 19.
The CCNY/ Universidad Veritas Summer Program at The Center for International Programs, July 1 – 28, enables participants to earn up to six credits. Students can take: intensive Spanish classes, integrated studies in art, design and architecture, or electives in tropical ecology, environmental studies, design and photography.
The CCNY/Centro de Investigaciones Regionales de Mesoamérica Spanish Language and Social Sciences Program runs June 15 – July 30. It offers courses on: Central American and Guatemalan history; anthropology; Mayan archaeology; Spanish language and literature, and Mayan languages, with cross-disciplinary focuses in culture, politics, geography and ethnography. Students can earn six to eight credits.
The CCNY/Yonsei University Global Village Program, June 25 – August 1, provides students with an intensive survey of Korean history and culture. Students also examine Korean perspectives and experiences in service and leadership at the local, regional and international level. The four-credit course includes daily Korean language instruction. Partial scholarships are available through a grant from the Korea Foundation.

- CCNY-CCCL Intensive Standard Arabic Language Summer Program, May 30 – July 3, Rabat, Morocco
- CCNY-Universidad de La Rioja Summer Study Abroad Program, June 28 – July 28, La Rioja, Spain
Student who enroll in the courses may be eligible to apply for City University of New York (CUNY) Study/Travel Opportunities for CUNY Students (STOCS) scholarships, which provide awards that range from $1,000 to $1,650.
