Six from City College Receive Fulbright Awards

Fulbright awards have been raining down on The City College of New York this spring as four professors, an undergraduate and a recent alumna have received grants from the program. Dr. Daniel DiSalvo, assistant professor of political science in the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership, Dr. Andrea Weiss, professor of film and video, and Jessie Chaffee, a 2011 graduate of the MFA program in creative writing, are the latest awardees.

Professor DiSalvo will teach a short-course on U.S. history and politics at Universidad de San Andres in Buenos Aires, May 19 to May 30. He will also give lectures at different cities in Argentina, including Cordoba, Rosario, and Santa Fe, in addition to Buenos Aires. He is supported by a Fulbright Specialist Program award, which enables U.S. faculty and professionals to engage in short-term collaborative projects at eligible institutions in 140 countries worldwide.

Dr. Andrea Weiss, professor of film and video, received a Fulbright Scholar Award to Spain for 2015 for research and production of a documentary, "Bones of Contention." The film will explore the theme of historical memory in post-Franco Spain with a focus on the erasure and denial of LGBT history. While in Spain, Professor Weiss will be affiliated with the Department of Audio-Visual Communications at Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.

Ms. Chaffee received a 2014-1015 Fulbright Award in Creative Writing. She is headed to Florence, Italy, to conduct research for and to complete her debut novel, which she began while a City College student. She will partner with several Italian organizations, including Florence University of the Arts (FUA), where she will serve as its writer-in-residence and work with students and local writers.

Other Spring 2014 Fulbright awardees at City College are:

• Dr. Adeyinka Akinsulure-Smith, associate professor of psychology in City College’s Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership. She will spend the 2014-15 academic year exploring women and wellness in post-conflict Sierra Leone, her native country.
• Dr. Tatyana Kleyn, associate professor in CCNY's School of Education, who will spend the fall 2014 semester in Mexico. She will teach a course to teachers of English as a Foreign Language and conduct a study about children who were deported or whose parents were deported from the United States back to Mexico.
• Graduating senior Simone Gordon who received a 2014-2015 Fulbright U.S. Student Award and will travel to India on a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship. Ms. Gordon is Class of 2014 salutatorian.
