Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter announces next link to “Force of the Future” in CCNY address

United States Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter speaks at The City College of New York to announce the next link to the “Force of the Future.” This is an initiative to modernize and expand how the Defense Department recruits, develops and retains service members and civilian employees.

In November 2015, Carter announced the first link to the Force of the Future, focused on building and expanding on-ramps and off-ramps for talent to flow between DoD and the technology sector, as well as reforms to modernize DoD's talent management systems.

In January 2016, he announced additional reforms focused on family retention for military personnel, including expanded maternity and paternity leave, extended childcare hours on bases and the possibility of some geographic flexibility in return for additional service
commitments.

And in June, Carter unveiled two additional links, including commonsense improvements to the officer promotion system and improvements to civilian recruiting such as allowing direct hiring on college campuses.

At CCNY, Carter will introduce additional reforms to build on these changes and continue building the Force of the Future.

At the conclusion of his remarks to the City College community and more than 100 ROTC cadets in CCNY’s Great Hall on November 1, the Secretary will respond to questions from the audience. The event starts at 11 a.m.
