Reinhardt family launches CCNY scholarship for first gen students

The Reinhardt Family Foundation Trust announces the establishment of an annual fellowship program at The City College of New York to support a high-achieving first-generation student demonstrating a commitment to social justice. Based on need, the Reinhardt Family Fellowship will provide the recipient full tuition plus expenses for a total of $42,000 over three years, said Mark Reinhardt, Esq., Trust Chairman.

The first Reinhardt Fellowship at CCNY, which has been a bastion for first-generation students since its founding in 1847, will be awarded in the fall 2025 semester. In addition to the aforementioned criteria, applicants must be in their sophomore year or higher, and must express interest in a career related to social justice.

”All my life I have fought for the little guy, and now I have a chance to help others who will do the same in the future. I hope this scholarship enables someone to really have a positive impact on society, and to someday look back on your life and, as I did, pay it forward,” said Reinhardt.

“We are deeply grateful to the Reinhardt family for establishing this scholarship, which was inspired by their recognition of our economic impact and mission, leading them to choose CCNY as the recipient of their generous support,” said Annika Lüdke, Director of corporate relations & foundation grants at The Foundation for City College.

About Mark Reinhardt
Mark Reinhardt is a founding partner in Reinhardt Wendorf & Blanchfield and is currently of counsel to the firm. Prior to forming Reinhardt Wendorf & Blanchfield, Reinhardt co-founded Reinhardt & Anderson in 1979. He is a 1971 graduate of Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America, and recipient of the Reginald Heber Smith Fellowship in 1971 and again in 1972. The Fellowship allowed him to work in the area of significant class action litigation. He is admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Minnesota and is a member of the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States, the Courts of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fourth, Sixth, Eighth and Ninth Circuits, the District of Minnesota, Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. In 2021, Columbus School of Law presented Reinhardt with its Distinguished Alumni Award.

Reinhardt’s first case, even before he passed the Minnesota bar, was the first consumer class-action lawsuit in the state — Rathbun v. WT Grant, which ended a widespread usurious scheme aimed at people of meager means. After two years working on the civil side of Legal Aid, he became a public defender, while also working as an adjunct professor of Law part-time. During this time, he successfully argued to the Minnesota Supreme Court the case of State v. L. B. McKinnley.  which banned the police practice of “random” stops of drivers with no articulable reason for the stop. He also was successful in the case of State v. Florence, which changed pre-trial practice in all Minnesota criminal cases by providing defendants with new evidentiary rights.

For the last 40 years, Reinhardt has devoted a major amount of his practice to antitrust, complex commercial, and class action litigation. Click here to read more
