Gayle King of CBS News to inaugurate Rick and Susan Goings Conversations in Leadership Series at the Colin Powell School

Thanks to a generous $1 million gift from Rick and Susan Goings in honor of the late General Colin L. Powell, the Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership will launch a new national speakers’ series, the Rick and Susan Goings Conversations in Leadership. The series will feature discussions with marquee names from every sector who have taken unconventional paths to success at the highest levels of their professions.

On Sept. 7, 2022, the series will kick off with a discussion with Gayle King, co-host of CBS Mornings and editor-at-large for O, The Oprah Magazine.  King will be in conversation with Susan Porcaro Goings, a former broadcast journalist and Co-Founder and Board Member of the World Federation of Youth Clubs. Their discussion will take place at 10:30 a.m. in The City College of New York’s Aaron Davis Hall, Theatre B, located at West 135th Street and Convent Ave. The event is free and open to the public. Please register here to attend

Rick Goings, Chairman Emeritus of Tupperware Brands, and Susan Goings are supporting this series to honor General Powell, their long-time friend and colleague. General Powell epitomizes the kind of leaders that will be featured in the series. General Powell was a leader of extraordinary depth and reach, and a trailblazer—the first Black Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the first Black Secretary of State. As he often reminded Colin Powell School students, he was also not someone anyone would have expected this success from when he was growing up. The Rick and Susan Goings Conversations in Leadership Series will probe deeply into the careers of those whose leadership has made a difference and who have persevered despite the odds. Through this series, we will develop an understanding of the styles and critical elements of leadership.

“Training new leaders from diverse backgrounds is at the heart of the mission of the Colin Powell School,” said Andrew Rich, the Richard J. Henley and Susan L. Davis Dean of the Colin Powell School. “The new Conversations in Leadership Series will bring some of the most accomplished leaders from every sector and from around the world to our campus to inspire and teach our students about what’s possible. We are enormously grateful for the vision, generosity, and support that Rick and Susan bring to this project, which honors their friend. The series will inspire our students and introduce the Colin Powell School to a broader national audience.”

Four events will be scheduled each year. In addition to Gayle King, speakers in the inaugural 2022-23 year will include former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Cesar Conde, the Chairman of NBCUniversal News Group.
