There are three different graduate program plans.  Please read below for brief descriptions and the course requirements of each.  

M.A. in English Education leading to NY State Initial Certification (43 credits)

This course of study is designed for students with little or no background in Education or English Education holding a BA in English or an English related discipline.

3 credits: SPED 5000K Introduction to Inclusive Education

4 credits: EDSE 1100E English Methods

4 credits: EDSE 7300E English Curriculum

3 credits: EDSE 1202E Teaching Reading

3 credits:  EDSE 1500E Teaching Writing
3 credits: ENGL 4400E Structure and Growth of the English Language

4 credits: EDUC 7600G Supervised Student Teaching

2 credit: EDSE 7603G Seminar on Teaching in Secondary Schools
0 credits: EDUC 1900G Workshops on Child Abuse Identification, School Violence Prevention, Dignity for All Students Act
3 credits:  EDSE 7200I Master’s Project

3 credits: Content Pedagogy Elective

3 credits: Content Pedagogy Elective 
3 credits: Content Pedagogy Elective


Additional Requirements: Combined course work, undergraduate & graduate, of 36 credits in English; Teacher Certification Exams - CST and EAS. 

M.A. in English Education leading to NY State Professional Certification (31 credits)
This course of study is designed for students with a strong background in Education or English Education and who currently have Initial Certification to teach Secondary English.


4 credits: EDSE 7300E English Curriculum

3 credits: EDSE 1500E Teaching Writing

3 credits: EDSE 7200I Master's Project: English Education Thesis

3 credits: SPED 5000K Introduction to Inclusive Education

3 credits: ENGLE 4400E Structure and Growth of the English Language

Advanced Credential Program leading to NY State Initial Certification (28 credits)

This non-degree course of study is for students with both a BA and MA in English or subject area approved by NYSED.
