“Perspectives from Marine Creatures”
Speaker: David Gruber, Presidential Professor of Biology and Environmental Science, Baruch College and an Explorer at the National Geographic Society
Date & Time: Tuesday, November 19. 2019: 4:15 PM: Refreshments at 3:45 PM
Location: Room 124 Steinman Hall (CCNY Engineering Bldg)
Abstract:
This talk will present recent research on biofluorescence and bioluminescence in marine systems. Novel soft robotics and low-light imaging platforms to investigate deep marine life have been developed and are being used in the most non-invasive means possible. Prof. Gruber has also developed a “Shark-Eye” camera to gain a shark’s perspective of their marine environment and is extending this visual theme to include other marine animals. David and his collaborators have discovered scores of novel biofluorescent compounds from marine animals. Several of these compounds have been deployed as tools to study cancer drugs and to understand the brain. He will also discuss recent work on using deep machine learning techniques for the detection and classification of Sperm Whale bioacoustics
