Celebrating Juneteenth https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/gca/blog/celebrating-juneteenth Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States. Annually celebrated on June 19, this holiday serves as an homage to the actual ending of slavery in 1865. While it's widely believed that Black enslaved people were set free by the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, not all were free until 2 1/2 years later.

[source: NYC Juneteenth Website]

The Black community built New York City. Arriving around 1626, their labor and ingenuity was integral to establishing this bustling city. Their hard work is a feat benefitted from by all, yet at times, unnoticed by many. In celebration of this vibrant community's perseverance, triumph, and overall contributions, we recognize Juneteenth.

[source: NYC Juneteenth Website]

In recognition of Juneteenth, New York City recently launched a Juneteenth Website: www.nyc.gov/juneteenth

The website offers Juneteenth information on citywide celebrations, events, community awareness and support for black-owned businesses.

The Official City Celebration will take place on Friday, June 18, 2021 @ 6:00 pm at St. Nicholas Park-James Baldwin Lawn (135th Street & St. Nicholas Avenue - Harlem).

NY State Public Health Leader Training Program https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/gca/blog/ny-state-public-health-leader-training-program Interested in becoming a Trained Public Health Leader in your Community? New York State and Cornell University have partnered to launch the New Citizen Public Health Training Program.

Over the past year, New Yorkers have come together to limit the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and support health and wellbeing in their communities. All New Yorkers are invited to sign up and complete the training, so that you will better understand the coronavirus and other public health issues facing our communities and will gain the tools to understand the facts and be a trusted source of information and support in your community.

The goal of this program is to have at least one Citizen Public Health Leader in every neighborhood and community. Leaders will understand the state of health in NY and the factors that influence health. They will have foundational knowledge related to key public health issues and skills to connect and communicate with peers, allies, and key social resources. As a Citizen Public Health Leader, you will be able to take an active role in helping your community prevent and rebuild from the effects of COVID-19. Over the longer term, you’ll be a part of an informed network that can be mobilized to share information and plan for prevention, detection, and response in the event of public health emergencies.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat Announces Limited Congressional Funding Availability for Community Projects https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/gca/blog/rep-adriano-espaillat-announces-limited-congressional-funding-availability-community On Wednesday, March 24th Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) announced the availability of limited federal funds through the annual federal appropriations process for local community projects.

Earlier this month, the House Appropriations Committee announced guidelines making reforms to and setting restrictions on requests from members of Congress for funding projects in their districts. “Community Project Funding” will be significantly more restricted than New York City Council Discretionary Funding or the New York State Legislature’s “Member Item Program,” but it will provide each member of Congress with the opportunity to make requests for funding specific projects in their districts for the first time in more than a decade. Funding may only be requested for a government agency or not-for-profit entity and can only be made for limited streams of federal funding. All requests made by members of Congress must be disclosed on their official House website and may not go to an entity in which a member of Congress or their family member has a financial interest. Members may submit up to 10 requests, though only two or three may be fulfilled.

Community organizations, not-for-profit entities, and government agencies are encouraged visit their dedicated Community Project Funding Request page and review the specific information on the types of projects that will be considered as well as instructions for submitting inquiries and applications. Requests will be selected based on eligibility set in law and on parameters determined by the Appropriations Committee, as well as based on the merits of the particular project and the benefits it would provide to communities in New York’s 13th Congressional District.

To find out more about Rep. Espaillat, visit online at https://espaillat.house.gov/.

Rep.

Blood Drive and Marrow Registration Drive on April 6th https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/blog/blood-drive-and-marrow-registration-drive-emil-temple-april-6th

On Tuesday April 6th, the New York Blood Center and The City College of New York will hold a Blood Drive and Marrow Registration Drive for Emil Temple, a college student from the Bronx suffering from a rare but serious form of bone marrow failure.

Countless blood and platelet transfusions are giving Emil a fighting chance until he finds a match. Please join in the efforts to help save Emil!

Blood and Marrow Drive
Tuesday, April 6th, 2021
The City College of New York
North Academic Center Ballroom
160 Convent Avenue, NYC
10 AM – 4 PM

To sign up, go to nybc.org/drive and search sponsor code 02844 or call New York Blood Center at 1-800-933-2566.
Walk-ins will be allowed if the schedule and room capacity permits.

About Emil: in September 2020 he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a life-threatening condition where bone marrow stops producing enough new blood cells. He is in desperate need of a stem cell transplant to survive.

Being half Dominican and half Panamanian makes finding a donor challenging. Emil has no matched siblings, and his mom is only a half match. Patients are most likely to match someone who shares their ethnic background.

To donate blood you must bring photo ID, NYBC donor card or donor ID # if you have one.

Face covering is required before entering the building.

Eat well and drink plenty of fluids before donating. For eligibility information visit nybc.org/eligibility.

Do not donate if you have:

  • a fever or other symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing)
  • had close contact with someone diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19 in the last 14 days
  • been diagnosed with or suspected of having COVID-19 until 14 days after your illness has resolved
  • NOTE: close contact is defined by CDC as being within 6 feet of an infected individual for a prolonged period of time

NY Blood Center does not test for COVID-19. Please contact your health care provider if you want to be tested.

New Laws Will Make It Easier for New Yorkers to Vote and Be Counted in November https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/gca/blog/new-laws-will-make-it-easier-new-yorkers-vote-and-be-counted-november Yesterday ( August 20th), Governor Cuomo signed election reform legislation that ensures every registered New Yorker has options on how to vote in the November 3rd  Election during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The legislation signed into law also takes steps to ensure that every vote is counted.

Starting August 20th, all registered voters can request an absentee ballot if they are concerned about COVID-19. All Boards of Elections in New York State must count:

All ballots postmarked on or before Election Day (November 3rd) and received within seven days after Election Day (by November 10th).

All ballots without a postmark received on November 4th (the day after Election Day).

Even if you voted by absentee ballot in the June Primaries, you will need to request an absentee ballot for the November 3rd Election.

Click Here for more information on this landmark legislation.

At one of the most important moments in our nation's history, these measures are crucial to a full and fair election and will make it easier for all New Yorkers to exercise their right to vote this November.

You can vote early in-person (October 24th – November 1st), you can vote on Election Day or you can vote using an absentee ballot. Make a Choice and Make your voice be heard.

For information on Voting safely, please visit the New York City Campaign Finance Board information page.

The NYC Board of Elections in the is hiring Poll Workers to serve at poll sites across New York City. Become an Election Day Worker and you can earn up to $2,800 for working up to 10 days.  Visit the BOE Poll Worker Positions webpage HERE.

NY State of Health Announcement - Special Enrollment Period https://www.ccny.cuny.edu/gca/blog/ny-state-health-announcement-special-enrollment-period To further protect the public health of New Yorkers as a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency, a Special Enrollment Period is available to New Yorkers during which eligible individuals will be able to enroll in insurance coverage through NY State of Health and directly through insurers.

Please refer to the following announcements:

  • Special Enrollment Period for Uninsured New Yorkers to Apply for Coverage through NY State of Health or directly to Insurers is extended through May 15, 2020

  • If You Lost Employer Coverage, You Must Apply Within 60 Days of Losing Coverage; Because of Loss of Income, New Yorkers May Also Be Eligible for Medicaid, the Essential Plan, Subsidized Qualified Health Plans or Child Health Plus

  • Pursuant to the new federal law, Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA), that went into effect on Wednesday, March 18, 2020, all Medicaid coverage in effect on the date the law was enacted will continue during the COVID-19 emergency. Although some Medicaid enrollees may have already received notices from NY State of Health that their coverage will end on March 31, 2020, the coverage will be continued. Any cases terminated after March 18, 2020 during the period of the COVID-19 emergency will be reinstated with no gap in coverage. Additionally, all Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Essential Plan cases that are due for recertification during the COVID-19 emergency period will be automatically renewed for a four-month period. The situation will be re-evaluated to determine if additional changes need to be made
